Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson is about two 18 year old girls, Cassie and Lia who are both dealing with anorexia, but right in the beginning of the book we see that cassie takes her life after her long battle with anorexia. both girls even though they aren't friends anymore they were both battling with the same thing. Lia (the main character) tries to come off as a normal teenager and like she isn't carrying the weight of the world on her shoulders but because she is going through so much it is starting to become clear to others that she needs help. Because the book is from her perspective we can see whats going on when she is making choices about eating food or throwing food up.
the messages Wintergirls talks about,
the book doesn't galm up anorexia at all, it doesn't make it seem plesurable at all, all throughout the book we can see that Lia has a problem, but as a reader we are only reading from her side so we start seeing where she's coming from and we almost start to agree with what she's doing, but once again we realize that Lia really does have a problem all throughout the book and she tries to deal with it but it is a mental problem.
this book really opened my mind to what happens when a person is anorexic or has a different type of mental problem. To lia not eating or eating as little as possible didn't phase her as hurting her body as readers we can tell. Wintergirls puts the reader in this awkward situation where the reader gets lost in Lia's character but then remembers that she insn't sane.
