ELA SOCIAL ACTIVISM #2

#4
original piece

I wrote this song after we had our anti drug assembly at school. Donna had said that if you wanted to create a poster or an art piece you could. I immediately had an idea to write a song. Writing songs is a really big way that I express myself and explain ideas and issues that I’m going through. I realized that writing a song about children being affected by drugs would be really hard but really rewarding. I started out by just fooling around on the guitar and playing the first things that came to my head. I then built the song around being in the 7th grade and change and then the entire song happened.

The song is about change and how change isn’t always good. It is about how some kids can get into drugs and be fine, but some kids aren’t fine when they do drugs but either way doing drugs is bad. The song is personal in the sense that I know kids who do drugs and I know a lot of them aren’t fine anymore. When you’re thirteen you think you know everything. Kids believe that the older they get they are suddenly granted knowledge by the knowledge fairy, and kids believe that with the knowledge that they have they know what the best choices are. Which is why kids think that it’s okay to do drugs. Kids believe that doing drugs is cool, because they see older kids doing drugs, and famous people and they think, “hey I want to be like them, I guess I have to do drugs to be like them.” The song is explaining that that idea of “ I’m thirteen and I’m infinite” is a lie. It is about how peer pressure is bad, and how it can lead to more mistakes then ever thought possible.

song lyrics

CHANGE

7th grade everything seemed to change
Everyone is going their own way
Will you make up
What you did and who you were?
We watched them pull you in

Just one puff, two puffs, three puffs, four
The EMT was at your door
One puff, two puffs, three puffs, four
Found out you might not be here no more
Wouldn’t take a child from this earth
Wouldn’t dare take a child from this earth
But you almost took yourself from this
Could’ve taken yourself from this earth
This earth

Grade school relationships
Staying above that damn influence
Holding on, holding on
We swore we would make it
I swore we’d be famous
Now, what happens now?

Just one puff, two puffs, three puffs, four
The EMT was at your door.
One puff, two puffs, three puffs, four
Found out you might not be here no more
Wouldn’t take a child from this earth
Wouldn’t dare take a child from this earth
But you almost took yourself form this
Could’ve taken yourself from this earth
This earth

We watched you change
We watched you cha-a-a-ange
Please stay the same
Please stay-ay ay ay
With me
